Obama’s tax cuts–how centrist is the president-elect?

President-elect Obama is smart enough to know that he won this election with strong backing from centrist voters. He also appears smart enough to realize that he has to govern this country by building a governing majority. That means touching all bases, ensuring that he does not alienate large swathes of voters. The FDR parallels abound but thing of think in these terms: first, there was no great liberal mandate in 2008. Obama, like FDR, promised to do something at a time when confidence in government, politics, and the economy was at an all time low. Second, he sees his presidency in six-month leases. He will need tradeoffs to be able to renew his lease on public will every six months. There is just no need to go out of his way to beat up on Republicans and Republicanism.
