THE BIG QUESTION, Dec. 30 — Steny Hoyer

The Big Question for Tuesday, Dec. 30:

Is $850 billion too much, too little, or just right for the next economic stimulus package?

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said:

Given current unemployment numbers and the prospect of a very long and painful recession, it is important that we enact an economic recovery package that will create jobs and boost our economy over the long term. This package should renew our infrastructure, stimulate our economy by extending unemployment insurance, invest in new energy technologies, and help cash-strapped states protect vital services like education and health care from damaging cuts. We will make certain that these investments prove effective by including tough accountability measures and ensure that this bill does not become a magnet for excessive projects.

Without bold action, economists predict that unemployment will climb to 9% or higher. We must take immediate steps to address the impact that this tough economy is having on millions of American workers and their families.
