I Think We’re Still Playing a Guessing Game (Rep. Jackie Speier)
November 19th, 2008
I’m very dismayed by the arrogance of Secretary Paulson in basically snubbing Congress. We wanted the TARP funds to be used to buy mortgages, to create lending opportunities. He basically has taken the money, invested it in banks, and the banks aren’t loaning. The banks are using the money for acquisitions, they’re holding onto the money. It’s not being used for the purpose in which Congress passed it. It was supposed to buy up these mortgages and free up credit. He says we’ve turned the corner in the financial system, but I don’t think we’ve turned the corner. I think we’re still playing a guessing game. I’m disappointed at his leadership.
We need a second stimulus package, but it has to be money that is injected immediately into projects that creates jobs. I’m not willing to prop up more industries in American right now, I want to create jobs. The only way you do that in my mind is infrastructure projects. I’m not talking about projects on the drawing table but projects that are designed, approved and ready to pour the cement.
