New Hampshire Teamsters Endorse Carol Shea-Porter

October 31st, 2008

There’s a reason New Hampshire Teamsters are going all out for Carol Shea-Porter’s re-election to the 1st Congressional District: She’s one of them.

She doesn’t wear a $150,000 wardrobe.

Carol came to the UPS terminal in Manchester on Tuesday wearing a windbreaker and slacks. She talked with Teamster drivers before they were dispatched for the day. She told our members that she wants to help the bottom 99 percent of Americans – which includes her. She has a mortgage, kids in college with student loans and a 401(k) that’s tanking like everyone else’s.

She bragged that she’s the fifth poorest member of Congress.

Carol’s special interest is the taxpayers and citizens of New Hampshire. She hasn’t been bought and paid for. That’s why the Teamsters have been visiting dozens and dozens of worksites to make sure their members vote for her.

Dave Laughton, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 633, said there are two specific reasons the union endorsed Shea-Porter. One is her criticism of the bailout, which wasn’t a good deal for taxpayers. The other is her support of the Employee Free Choice Act, which would make the process for joining a union much fairer to workers.

Carol was a long-shot for a congressional seat in New Hampshire two years ago. She beat a well-financed incumbent by enlisting support from the grassroots — blue-collar workers, the Netroots and basically everyone who works for a living.

No one thought she could win an underfunded campaign in New Hampshire, for a long time a Republican stronghold. Things are changing in New Hampshire, though, and not for the better. Mills and factories are shutting down all over the state, in Laconia, Berlin, Groveton, Manchester, Nashua, Concord. It’s harder and harder to find a good job.

Carol deserves a second term in Congress. And the bottom 99 percent in the 1st Congressional District deserve it, too.
