It’s important to recognize the huge success of the surge, and we need to keep talking about that because, so often, people are not willing to elaborate on it.

People want to dwell on the problems thereafter, which, in this case, is Afghanistan.

I think the best thing that happened in today’s Senate Armed Services Committee hearing is the recognition of the problems. The problem in Afghanistan is the fact that there’s no central authority to deal with, which makes it very difficult to deal with the warlords and local mayors. It’s corrupt over there. But I think the fact is that success is looming.

It’s not over in Iraq certainly but very few people lingering around now saying we shouldn’t have been there so I think the hearing today was good.
