Obama’s pick of Sen. Biden signals to gun owners the party is over
August 26th, 2008
By adding Sen. Joe Biden to the 2008 Democrat party ticket, gun rights activists believe Barack Obama is sending a clear message to the firearms community that they can forget about all the rhetoric of the past several months; gun owners aren’t welcome and their rights really don’t matter after all.
Biden has one of the most consistently anti-gun voting records on Capitol Hill. He recalled during a July 23, 2007 Democrat candidates debate how he was “the guy who originally wrote the assault weapons ban,” while overlooking the fact that the legislation, passed in 1994, combined with passage of the Brady Act in 1993, brought furious gun owners to the polls in record numbers and cost Democrats control of Congress for 14 years.
Firearms owners were already wary of Obama after he told a Pittsburgh newspaper earlier this year that he is opposed to concealed carry, a remark that insulted millions of legally armed, law-abiding citizens. Now Obama has picked Mr. Biden, who was quoted by the Associated Press in November 1993 observing, “Banning guns is an idea whose time has come.”
Democrats have spent years trying to woo the gun owner vote. Biden’s selection for the vice presidential slot signals Democrats have become the Gigolo Party.
