Speaker Pelosi: Let Us Debate and Give Us Freedom to Vote Our Conscience
August 6th, 2008
I think it would be unfair to assign specific rationale or tactics to Nancy Pelosi. I think she’s a nice person who’s sincere in what believes. However, I feel that what she believes is wrong. It is true that if you’re rich, this is an annoyance, but if you’re on a fixed income or poor, this is a matter of life or death. For someone at the poverty level, 50 percent of what he or she makes goes to energy costs. For people like that, this is such a great pain in their lives. A lot of people in the upper income level brackets – which could include Speaker Pelosi - just don’t quite catch onto that same sense of desperation.
There are a lot of pro-energy Democrats and anti-energy Democrats. So far the latter is calling the shots and setting the agenda. One thing we’re asking Speaker Pelosi is to give us freedom to vote our conscience. Let’s get it on the floor and have a real debate and a real discussion and vote.
Regarding the upcoming elections, I always thought the notion that we’re going to lose big-time was overrated. If we don’t solve this problem, this will be one of the election’s key issues. Pressure is building on everybody in Congress. Even anti-energy Democrats - after spending a month with their people, are going to get an earful. The pressure will build. Ultimately it’s going to burst and we will do something.
