We Need to Hear from Dept. of Defense on “Dont Ask, Don’t Tell” (Rep. Walter B. Jones)

July 24th, 2008

The issue for many of us in both parties is: what does the military need. But that wasn’t the issue in yesterday’s hearing on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

It’s good to have a pro and con on the issue, but when you really come down to what is important to the national security of this country, we need to listen to the leadership of the services.

I have respect for, but disagree with, the witnesses who were testifying yesterday. I think it is fine to hold a hearing, but we weren’t hearing from the Department of Defense. We need to hear from the military on this issue.

I think that if you were going to move a bill, you would have to talk to the Department of Defense and the leadership of the services. Let them—the men in uniform, the generals, the admirals—speak to the members of Congress if you’re going to have a debate over whether we should or should not repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”
