“Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” Should be Overturned in the Near Future (Rep. Joe Sestak)
July 23rd, 2008
Without any question, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will be overturned in the not-too-distant future. And it should be. I’ve found in working with the military in my district that this isn’t an issue for them.
It’s not just that we aren’t able to have these people serve, but it doesn’t stand up to the highest ideals of America.
I think you need to respect the opinions of the witnesses. These are debates we have about the right way to go forward. We had these debates in the halls of Congress about civil rights for African-Americans.
I think you’ll find that comments like Ms. Elaine Donnelly’s today are not at all in the vast majority of America’s opinion. I honestly do believe that, as we’ve done in the past, Americans look at this in a collective way as a time when, after we have gone through equal rights for African-Americans and equal rights for women, it’s time to say, “Equal rights for them, too.” And I believe that.
It’s not a issue that people care to have be a division on the part of our military.
