House Oversight Should Pressure Scott Bloch to Resign (Rep. Tom Davis)
July 22nd, 2008
Yesterday, I wrote to Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, to ask for a third time that he turn this committee’s powerful microscope on U.S. Special Counsel Scott Bloch’s unethical and perhaps illegal activities. I’ve also asked Chairman Waxman to join Rep. Chris Shays (R-Conn.) and Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) in calling for Mr. Bloch’s resignation or removal from office so the important work of protecting the rights of federal employees can go on.
My recent letter was prompted by the resignation of Mr. Bloch’s top deputy, Jim Byrne. Mr. Byrne’s departure letter stated in no uncertain terms the danger Mr. Bloch’s continued presence holds for OSC: “Upon my departure, I am obligated to note that the mission, independence and very existence of the Office of Special Counsel are – and shall remain – at risk unless and until this agency is afforded a presidentially appointed, Senate-confirmed leader who is capable of putting OSC’s mission and OSC’s people ahead of political and personal vendettas.”
I’m glad to see Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) also express interest in talking to Mr. Byrne.
You can read a copy of my letter to Chairman Waxman here.
