Energy Independence: An American Imperative (Sen. Susan Collins)
July 22nd, 2008
This was a very important hearing that allowed us to gather a great deal of information on the number one domestic challenge facing our country, and that is the need for energy independence.
We’re facing an energy crisis as a country, but it’s particularly severe for a state like Maine, which is not only cold, but also so dependent on imported oil. I’m very excited by Dr. Dagher’s plan because I think it complements and completes the Pickens plan. Unlike the Pickens plan, Habib Dagher’s plan would provide alternative energy resources to the coastal areas of the United States. So I’m very excited about it and eager to help. I believe that energy independence is an American imperative. We missed the opportunity to achieve it back in the 1970’s. We cannot make the same mistake again.
