Democrats’ Hearing on Wages Ignores Real Threat to Wages (Rep. Howard ‘Buck’ McKeon)

July 16th, 2008

The American people are struggling with record-high prices at the pump. Just this morning, AAA reports a nationwide average of $4.11 for a gallon of regular unleaded and $4.84 for a gallon of diesel. Yet Democrats are stubbornly refusing to acknowledge the hardship caused by high gas prices, and they have been unwilling to take any concrete action to bring those prices down. Democrats are wearing such large blinders to the burden of high gas prices that they actually held a hearing yesterday on workers’ wages that inexplicably ignored one of the greatest factors currently diminishing wage value: the price at the pump. Republicans are deeply concerned about the plight of American workers, and that’s why we have unveiled energy, security, and economic reform packages to get the country back on the right track. Unfortunately, Democrats have refused to join us in offering comprehensive solutions to benefit American families. It’s time for the Democratic Congress to stop ignoring the real threat to Americans’ wages and embrace our all-of-the-above energy strategy to increase production here at home, encourage the development of alternative fuels, and promote greater conservation.
