Uncovering an Obama-nation (Tom McClusky, Vice President of Government Affairs for FRCAction)
June 30th, 2008
Last week FRCAction launched a new television commercial in response to statements Senator Barack Obama made about fatherhood this past Father’s Day. The comment that the Senator made was “We need fathers to recognize that responsibility doesn’t just end at conception.” While Senator Obama is correct in that many fathers need to step up more in the raising of their children and to take more responsibility, he seemed to miss the irony that if one becomes a parent at conception, with all the responsibilities involved, what are they a parent of? (If the Senator is reading this here is a hint: The American Heritage Dictionary defines a parent as “One who begets, gives birth to, or nurtures and raises a child; a father or mother.”
Amazingly a number of people are unaware of Senator Obama’s extreme views on the issue of abortion. However within his record it is clear he fully supports the abortion industry and they fully support him. As a state Senator in Illinois he repeatedly fought against a law that would have provided basic medical care to infants who survived an abortion. The federal version of this act was even supported by NARAL Pro-Choice America and other stalwart abortion “rights” Senators including Ted Kennedy and Barbara Boxer. Additionally while in the Illinois State Senate, Barack Obama voted against legislation that prohibited taxpayer dollars from being used to pay for abortion.
As a U.S. Senator, the junior Senator from Illinois made it clear whose pockets he would be residing in. In 2005, his first year in office, Obama voted for the Reid/Clinton amendment to S. Con. Res. 18, (amendment to the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act.) The amendment would have expanded the Title X program, giving tax dollars to “family planning” programs. Additionally Obama voted to support the Boxer Amendment to S.600 (Peace Corp funding bill), which would have effectively rescinded the Mexico City policy. Even Planned Parenthood sees these votes as increasing taxpayer funding for abortion, as they scored both votes as pro-choice votes in their annual scorecard.
Speaking of scorecards Senator Obama has consistently scored a 0% in FRCAction’s annual scorecards. These votes include a bill that would have protected parents and children by preventing circumvention of state laws that require parental notification before minors obtain an abortion and an amendment and a vote that would have allowed states the option to provide health care insurance for unborn children under the popular State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP.) So, from state Senate to the U.S. Senate Barack Obama has fought against protecting children – both born and unborn. Additionally as a candidate his campaign has stated that he “does not support” the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion through the Medicaid program.
The ad ran in the greater Cincinnati metro area and is scheduled to run in other cities. If Senator Obama has an answer to the paradox he has created – I’d love to hear it.
