Combating Climate Change Requires Tough Choices (Rep. John Shimkus)

June 30th, 2008

On Thursday the House Energy and Air Quality Subcommittee held a hearing on Climate Change. In my opening remarks I asked, “Is there a worldwide movement to have a centralized standard of living around high energy prices and environmental policies?”

We have heard in past hearings that climate change regulations will increase fuel costs and will increase electricity costs. What is the effect of these increased costs on the poor and in rural areas? What is the increased cost to government to assist those affected?

I believe we have very hard decisions ahead of us. As I stated Thursday, I will stand with “small, poor, middle class, rural America…as climate change will be devastating to them.”
