Upcoming Conference Will Focus on Whistleblowers’ Rights (Government Accountability Project)

June 18th, 2008

A national conference taking place next Monday, June 23, will educate potential federal and corporate whistleblowers and their counsel of new legal protections they enjoy. The Emerging Era in Whistleblower Rights and the Public’s Right to Know explores recent legislative advances in whistleblower rights, along with pending legislation to enhance transparency, accountability and employee free speech rights. The conference is sponsored by the Government Accountability Project (GAP) and American University Washington College of Law.

GAP has seen a dramatic increase in whistleblower disclosures, particularly by federal employees, since the Bush administration took office. The conference is an opportunity for whistleblowers that have information crucial for maintaining government integrity to learn how to better navigate the system. Prominent whistleblowing figures will be in attendance. Coleen Rowley, former FBI Special Agent and one of three Time Magazine “Persons of the Year” in 2002, will serve as the keynote speaker. Computer security expert Babak Pasdar, whose disclosures about secret government spying on cell phone users in the US are credited with helping to stop a Congressional agreement to grant telecommunication companies retroactive immunity as part of a national security bill, will provide a luncheon address.
Several pieces of legislation successfully signed into law over the last year have afforded whistleblowers new protections, and other sweeping legislation with broad protections are imminent. The conference will host three panels to discuss these protections: Restoring Openness and Accountability to Government and Corporations; The Special Case of National Security Whistleblowers; and The Next Steps toward Achieving a Comprehensive Openness Agenda.

For more information or to sign up to attend this free conference, visit GAP’s Web site at http://www.whistleblower.org/template/page.cfm?page_id=213. Registration will also be available on-site. The event is set to last from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the AU Washington College of Law: 4801 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, Room 603. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served, and limited free parking is available.
