House GOP Will Force Votes on Legislation to Lower Gas Prices (House Minority Leader John Boehner)
June 10th, 2008
Americans are tired of the Democratic Majority’s inaction as gas prices soar to more than $4 per gallon. The Pelosi Premium is hitting working families hard at a time when they are confronting high costs of living, a slowing economy, and a housing crunch.
House Republicans will lead where the Democrats have failed. Beginning today, Republicans will offer a series of discharge petitions aimed at forcing the Democratic leadership to schedule several GOP-sponsored bills to increase production of American-made energy, reduce America’s costly dependence on foreign sources of energy, harness new alternative energy technologies, and lower gas prices.
Rep. Tim Walberg offered the first discharge petition in this effort – one that seeks to force Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Hoyer to schedule Rep. Mac Thornberry’s No More Excuses Energy Act. The Thornberry bill will open new American oil refineries, invest in alternative energy sources, and increase environmentally-safe exploration of untapped oil resources in the United States.
Today also marks the launch of GOPLeader.gov/energy, a resource for information on House Republicans’ solutions to America’s energy problems. Visitors to the new website will see how House Republican leaders will deliver real change on gas prices by increasing production of American-made energy, promoting new clean and reliable energy, cutting red tape, and encouraging greater efficiency through tax incentives.
Unfortunately, House Democrats have refused to join Republicans in supporting responsible solutions that will provide relief at the pump. What will it take for the Democratic majority to begin listening to the American people?
