GOP Working to Improve Health Care (Sen. Chuck Grassley)
June 10th, 2008
Republicans have a good agenda on health care for this fall. Led by Sen. Bennett of the Republicans along with Sen. Biden, we’re working to make sure all Americans have health insurance. This will have the benefit of moving things more toward the market place and more toward individual policy.
It also addresses some inequities in the present where people with a very high income get a better benefit out of tax exemptions than those with a lower income.
We have a lot of people who don’t have health insurance, and by capping those tax exemptions, you’re going to bring some discipline to the market, reduce inflation maybe two to three percentage points, and then, you’re going to have resources to provide for people who don’t have health care.
I think there are two things with health care that are important. First is the uninsured, but the uninsured are part of the other problem, which is that you and I, if we have heath insurance, pay for the 10 percent who don’t have health insurance. So this provides not only access to the system to people who don’t have insurance, but, by bringing more people under the umbrella, will also reduce costs to individuals, because you’re not going to have as much emergency room service.
