Democrats’ Hearing on Immigration is Politically Motivated (Rep. Steve King)

June 4th, 2008

I think it’s safer to be in an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility than it is to be on the streets of Chicago. I think that’s one thing we know. It’s safer to be there than it is to be in the streets of Houston or Los Angeles, or Detroit for that matter.

I can’t think of a city that’s represented by any of the Democrats who’re on the Judiciary Subcommittee for Immigration that are safer than ICE detention facilities. I think they ought to take a look at the safety of their own constituents. This has turned up because it’s political. If you look at all the New York Times articles, you can get a pretty good idea of why we’re here—not because of any data that supports their argument.

The testimony I heard today doesn’t tell me there’s an endemnic problem; in fact, it says the opposite. But none of the Democrats on that side—the people who brought this hearing—pointed to any data. They are very good at raising anecdotes that causes someone’s heart to beat.
