Congress May Need to Act on Detained Immigrants’ Safety (Rep. Zoe Lofgren)

June 4th, 2008

I think the idea that some cities are more dangerous than Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities is bizarre and completely off the point.

When you take people into custody, you assume some obligations. It’s like saying some people in America are hungry, so you don’t have to feed the people in your jail. That’s not correct.

I thought the Washington Post’s series on the subject was compelling. We had a hearing in October on this, and, at the time, we had seen disturbing reports. I pointed out to the government’s witness at the time that they have the power to correct these themselves. They have not done so. So I think it’s important for Congress to look and see what legislative action we need to take in the face of their failure.
