Provide School Choice for Foster Kids (Rep. Michele Bachmann)

May 15th, 2008

I am thrilled that the House unanimously voted last night to pass my bill honoring public child welfare agencies, nonprofit organizations and private entities providing services for foster children (H.Res. 789). Today, there are more than 500,000 children in foster care nationwide, many of whom come from troubled homes and have been moved from family to family several times. My husband and I have cared for 23 foster children, and I know from experience that the organizations that work with foster kids play a critical role in ensuring they are matched with loving families and grow up to achieve successful lives.

To complement this resolution, I hope the House will soon have the opportunity to consider H.R. 4311, the School Choice for Foster Kids Act. This act will allow foster children of all ages to stay at the school they’ve grown comfortable with even when they change foster homes. It is vital that the organizations committed to improving the lives of foster care children continue to be commended for their hard work and sacrifices.
