I had the distinct honor of meeting with General Petraeus on my most recent trip to Iraq.  General Petraeus is a man of outstanding character, and I believe that he will be remembered as one of the greatest generals of our generation.  Since he took over command in Iraq, we have seen remarkable progress.  General Petraeus and his troops have kept al Qaeda on the run, and they are making history as they bring stability to Iraq. I have the upmost confidence in his ability to continue to command our troops in his new role as head of CENTCOM, and I applaud Secretary Gates on this appointment.
