The job loss statistics announced today are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to bad news about the economy. While the Bush Administration continues its disastrous trillion-dollar war in Iraq, bleak news about the economy continues to mount here at home.  We see millions of families facing the loss of their homes in foreclosure and stagnant wage growth after years of Republicans neglecting the economy.

Democrats have been offering a new direction, positioning the country to recover from these disastrous Republican economic policies.  The Democratic Congress led the way on an economic stimulus package, but we must do more if we are going to head off what Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has warned could be a recession.

Congress is working to pass meaningful and effective measures to bring the sub-prime mortgage crisis under control.  And we have passed legislation that will help our economy in the long run, by investing in renewable energy and creating a new generation of green-collar jobs.

Only by continuing our commitment to the middle class through policies like these will we recover from the Bush Administration’s incompetent management of the economy.
