We Owe Our Troops A Debt of Gratitude (Rep. Linda Sanchez)

March 25th, 2008

On this, the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, I honor the service of our men and women in uniform

Although I have many disagreements with the administration over the legitimacy of this war, and how this war has been waged, we all agree that we owe our troops a debt of gratitude.

Last week, I read a Washington Post article on a study that showed less than 30 percent of U.S. citizens know there have been over 4,000 members of our armed services killed in Iraq.

In fact, the survey showed people are following the presidential campaign process much more closely.

While we engage in this historic presidential race—a race I hope will bring change to our nation and Iraq—we must not forget the very people who ensure the survival of our freedoms, and the loved ones they leave behind.

Their sacrifices transcend geographic, racial, economic and religious divisions and show us that we are a nation far more alike than different in our commitment to the institutions and exercise of liberty.

I recognize that my own words pale in comparison to the devotion of the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, but I urge all Americans to honor the loyalty and sacrifice of our troops and to pray—as I do—for their safe return.
