We Can’t Undo A Past Mistake But We Can Put Things Right (Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson)

March 25th, 2008

The number of American soldiers killed in Iraq has now climbed past 4,000, and more than 20,000 of our servicemen and women have been wounded, many with psychological traumas they will carry for the remainder of their lives.

Our soldiers serving in Iraq—some of them still teenagers—are living in constant danger and risking their lives for our nation every day. As a mother and a grandmother, I empathize with their families, many of which are struggling without them.

It’s time to stop paying such a terrible price for the mistake we made in 2002. We can’t undo that decision, but we can work to put things right by acknowledging that it is not in our interests to maintain a massive troop presence in Iraq. During the recess, my constituents relayed to me that they are tired of the administration’s head-in-the-sand approach in Iraq.

Today, I reiterate my commitment to bringing our troops home. Too many of our soldiers have sacrificed too much for this war, and it is time to lift the burden from their shoulders.
