Congress Must Act on Senate’s Consensus Mental Health Legislation (Sen. Mike Enzi)

March 6th, 2008

Sen. Enzi is ranking member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

I am disappointed that House leaders have passed a version of mental health parity legislation against stiff opposition, and I urge leaders in the House and Senate to act on consensus mental health legislation, passed unanimously in the Senate, to ensure greater health insurance parity for persons with mental illness.

In the Senate we were able to bring together all sides of this debate to reach a consensus and pass a bill unanimously to provide new hope for families suffering from the devastating effects of mental illness. I am displeased that the Democrat leadership in the House rejected the opportunity to act on the Senate bill, which has broad support, and instead chose to wage an uphill battle for a bill we all know stands no chance of becoming law.
