At a time when our country faces many challenges – the greatest being the Global War on Terrorism – Senator John McCain is the right man to be our Commander-in-Chief. He has spent a lifetime serving our nation both as a pilot in the Navy and as a Representative and Senator. His experience gives him the knowledge to lead this nation and inspire the American people to move forward in the critical years ahead.

I commend Chairman Dinkins and the other members of the Board for their hard work and dedication to the cause of safeguarding our fundamental liberties. Our decision to strengthen the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board reflects their experience and a desire to ensure the Board’s independence. The White House’s failure to move forward with appointing the new board is unacceptable, and I call on the Administration to do so as quickly as possible to prevent a gap in this vital mission.

I’m very pleased that the voters are coming to the same conclusion that I did long ago regarding this year’s presidential election; that John McCain is clearly the person who should be the next president of the United States. He is ready to lead, and to lead in the right direction. And he is the one Republican who can win in November.

We need to make some changes with FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act), and I believe that it can be done. I also believe that it will be done.

I believed in Mayor Giuliani’s candidacy and am disappointed that the campaign failed to draw enough support to continue. At this point, none of the other candidates have contacted me and I have not considered making a new endorsement.

Rudy challenged conventional wisdom - and conventional wisdom won. I still think Rudy is the best candidate to deal with the important challenges of our time, but I respect the primary process and the voters’ choice. When it comes to backing another nominee - I will look at the candidates and determine who will best serve Missouri and the nation’s interests.

Rudy Giuliani was a great mayor and a great candidate who would have made a great President. I am disappointed he didn’t do better in this race and intend to take a closer look at the remaining Republican candidates, their positions, and their strengths in a general election race before deciding when to endorse or even whether to endorse another candidate.
