New Iraq Bill Is an Opportunity for Democrats (Sen. Ben Cardin)

November 13th, 2007

I think the new Iraq bill is an opportunity for us to try to change the mission, and I hope that we take advantage of it. Whether we’ll succeed is unlikely — because we don’t have the votes to override a veto, and perhaps we might not even have 60 votes to move it in the Senate — but I think we have to try.

This is a bill that is not essential to pass. That is, the president would like to have the convenience of what we call the bridge funds, but I think it’s an excellent chance for us to take up the issue and try to see whether we have more support. I hope we take advantage of it.
