The Record Setting 110th Congress (Rep. Randy Kuhl)

November 6th, 2007

The 110th Congress has been a “record-setting congress:

  1. The approval rating for Congress is at a staggering 11%, the lowest in history.
  2. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) unveiled the single largest tax hike in American history totaling $3.5 trillion dollars.
  3. It has been over 20 years since Congress has failed to send a single appropriations bill to the president this late in the year.
  4. The House cast a record-setting 1,000 Roll Call votes, but of those 1,000 votes, only 107 of those were signed into law and 47 of the bills named post offices and other property.

The Democrat’s new math in Washington: Tax increases + stalling important legislation for political gain + inconsequential votes - transparency and accountability = 11% approval ratings.

When the Democrats took control of Congress last year, they were full of promises to the American people. Among those promises were five day work weeks, the creation of a transparent and accountable government, and the desire to pass significant legislation. Fast forward ten months and these promises have proven to be empty political rhetoric.

Recently, upon House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer’s request, the work week has been shortened to three and a half days. The Democrats, quite ironically, have secretly funneled hundreds of millions of dollars into numerous bills without identifying the source and purpose — clearly not the “clarityâ€? the American people were promised and expected. Wasteful spending is out of control. Does a museum really need a one million dollar exhibit on Woodstock?

Lastly, the Democratic leadership touts their record setting 1,000 Roll Call votes. I know that my constituents did not send me to Washington D.C. to rename federal buildings. Where is the legislation on immigration, Social Security, or Medicare? Why doesn’t the majority approach the real problems with this country instead of bragging amount the number of votes we have cast? The 110th Congress can vote a million times, but until the veterans have their funding, low-income children have healthcare, and we devise a practical solution to illegal immigration, what does the Democratic leadership have to brag about?

America expects us to get the job done. America expects us to keep our promises and take care to our veterans, children, and seniors. My constituents aren’t counting on me to cast votes, but to tackle the real issues affecting their daily lives.
