Intelligence is a key to what we do to protect America. There’s no way we can guard every building and every airplane — it’s intelligence that saves our lives, identifying attacks before they occur.

We have got to fix this problem. It will be devastating to our national defense if we don’t fix it, and I am confident the proposal that has been offered by Admiral McConnell will allow us to be successful in protecting America and in obtaining needed intelligence without damaging our liberties, which we value. It’s just that simple, and I think a lot of the criticism is misplaced.
