Waiting for Petraeus

September 10th, 2007

Iraq commanding Gen. David Petraeus is scheduled to testify Monday before a joint House committee that is larger than the Senate.

Petraeus will give his assessment of the 30,000-troop “surge before the 107 members of the House Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees. Though it has been widely reported that Petraeus will report military success, while acknowledging there have been few civilian accomplishments, the hearing is viewed as a major milestone in the Iraq debate.

The hearing is one of the most anticipated since former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment proceedings.

Inside the hearing room, 107 bottles of water are standing at attention, waiting for the arrival of Petraeus, who will sit slightly higher than most lawmakers during the hearing.

Petraeus is scheduled to testify before a joint Senate panel tomorrow.
