Gen. Clark Is Mum on Potential Endorsement
August 3rd, 2007
Jonathan E. Kaplan, a staff writer for The Hill, is covering the YearlyKos convention and will provide periodic updates on the Congress Blog.
The YearlyKos Convention continues Friday with panels on the blogosphere’s relationship with the mainstream media and other panels featuring economic and foreign policy advisers to the different Democratic presidential candidates.
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark started the day by speaking to more than 500 convention-goers, criticizing the Bush administration and praising the netroots.
Clark spoke with reporters from the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, TalkingPointsMemo.com and www.ustream.tv. Each of us tried to get him to jump into the presidential fray, asking him about the state of play in the presidential race, whether he would endorse a candidate for president, and if the use of nuclear weapons should be an option.
In short, Clark said the Democrats have fielded some very strong candidates.
“Elections turn on personality and events, he said, explaining he could not predict the winner of the 2008 Super Bowl or World Series, much less the White House.
He has not yet endorsed and has not decided if he will.
In response to Obama’s response to a hypothetical question about whether he would use nuclear weapons against al Qaeda, Clark said, “I don’t think you take options off the table.
Clark started his day with a one-mile swim at the University of Illinois-Chicago campus. His endurance is strong and his strokes are solid, particularly his freestyle and backstroke.
