The Employee Free Choice Act’s 51 Votes Are Surprising (Sen. Bob Corker)

June 26th, 2007

I carried a union card as a young man and in my business sat on a pension board to make sure that my union employees actually received their pensions and health benefits, and so I really have worked closely with labor through the years. I’ve employed people around the country and I’m surprised that as many people as did today voted for card check. Fortunately it didn’t pass, cloture was not invoked, but to think that truly someone going up to a water cooler at a construction site could be intimidated into signing a card check, or especially someone living in a rural area at home could be intimidated at their home at night to get them to sign a card check—most union members are opposed to card check; they know that it does away with their secret ballot rights—here in the Senate when we elect leadership we do it by secret ballot—there’s a reason for that. I am just strongly opposed to card check and truly am surprised that there were 51 votes in favor of it today.
