A Humble President Who Renewed Our Faith in Government

Friday, December 29th, 2006

We mourn the death of one of America’s most respected Presidents. President Ford was a man of courage, honor and integrity. He was able to bring a divided country together in the aftermath of a national scandal — Watergate.

President Ford put a healing hand on the nation. He renewed people’s faith in government. President Ford was determined in his efforts to bring America together.

His ability to govern with a calm composure and endless optimism, despite the many tribulations he faced during his Presidency, exemplifies attributes that made this man great. We honor and mourn a President who was a leader during one of America’s darkest times.

Through the years I had many opportunities to greet President Ford during visits to both Cleveland and Washington.  I always found him to be very humble about the enormous responsibilities that he shouldered.

President Ford led the country out of turmoil and his strong leadership skills brought Americans together. My thoughts and prayers are with the Ford family.

I Hope We Will Heed Gerald Ford’s Legacy

Friday, December 29th, 2006

Gerald Ford was a noble, honorable man who emerged as a leader at a time when Americans were questioning their government. President Ford came into office after America’s first Presidential resignation and also one of America’s first definitive failures at war. President Ford showed us that strength and integrity were necessary to the American presidency.

President Ford took power following one of the most difficult times in our nation’s history and brought America back together.  As power has just changed hands in Congress, it is my hope that we will heed the legacy of Gerald Ford and always seek to stand together to face the challenges of the future.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Ford family.

A Life Devoted to Family and Country

Friday, December 29th, 2006

My thoughts and prayers are with Betty Ford, the Ford children, and the entire Ford family over the loss of President Gerald Ford — a distinguished American who served his country with honor.

Gerald Ford devoted his life to his family and his country, serving in the Navy, in Congress, then as Vice President and ultimately as President.  He served during some very difficult moments for our country and helped heal a nation that was disillusioned by politics in the post-Watergate era.  Throughout his time in public office, Gerald Ford always carried himself with strength, dignity, and grace.  He was a true gentleman and with a steady hand he helped restore honor to the office of the presidency.

While my view on matters of policy may have differed from President Ford, I respected him for doing what he believed was in the best interests of the United States.  Leaders like Gerald Ford who have a deep respect for our Constitution and are grounded in principles of honesty and integrity serve our country well.

Duty Called, President Ford Responded

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

From the time Gerald Ford served as Vice President of this nation, history seemed to have a special place reserved for him. President Ford was a deeply respected countryman and when duty called to unite the country after one of the worst and divisive political scandals, he did so with humility, grace and courage. He was selfless and frank, making decisions based on their impact, regardless of their popularity. That is what helped America move through the Watergate scandal and return integrity to the Office of the President.

I express my condolences to former First Lady Betty Ford and the entire Ford Family. May they take comfort in the fact that President Ford’s impact on this nation is great and his legacy long.

President Ford - A Statesman and a Gentleman

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

President Gerald Ford was more than a politician; he was a statesman and a gentleman.  Gerald Ford will always be remembered as the leader who found the courage and the capacity to heal an injured nation.  When this country faced one of the greatest constitutional crises in our history, he responded to the bitter anguish and disappointment of the American people with a determination to bring this nation together.  He did not make a popular decision, but he had the daring and the conviction to put the best interests of the American people first.

A few years ago, I was deeply moved and honored to have received the John F. Kennedy Profiles in Courage Award on the same program as Pres. Ford.  To this day, I still have wonderful memories of that moment and treasure the photographs of us together in my home and my office.  The whole nation mourns the loss of this statesmen and extends its deepest sympathy to his wife Betty and the Ford family.

President Ford left us with a great legacy of bringing our nation together following Watergate and the Vietnam War. His decency, candor, honesty and leadership set an example for all Americans. I regret his passing, but I am sure his stature will continue to grow as one of our country’s most unifying leaders.

The Loss of a Great Man

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

President Gerald Ford was a great American and a great Michigander. One of my fondest moments was when, as Michigan Secretary of State, I placed an historic marker in front of President Ford’s boyhood home in Grand Rapids which had just been restored. President Ford spoke that day about how the values instilled in him in that home, in that community and in our great state of Michigan helped sustain him throughout his life. It was those values which helped him to assume the Presidency at one of the most difficult moments in our nation’s history and to lead with honor and dignity.

My best wishes go out to Betty Ford and their entire family as our nation mourns the loss of this great man.

A Great Leader in a Time of Turmoil

Thursday, December 28th, 2006

In a time of great turmoil in our nation’s history, Gerald Ford was chosen to be Vice President because of his impeccable integrity and the confidence that members of Congress from both Parties had in his leadership.  When he became President, he was a healing force and continued to be a sought-after voice of reason throughout his life.  My thoughts and prayers go out to Betty and the whole Ford family as we honor a public servant who gave tirelessly to our country over nearly three decades in elected office.
